Anne Boleyn
- Eric Ives Anne
BoleynCurrently out of print. Even those who have little interest in
the story of the second wife of Henry VIII could be attracted by Mr. Ives clear
writing style, wit and "proper historical scepticism". To those with a keener
interest, this book is as irresistible as Anne herself. With much of the book based on
original research, the text offers new and absorbing insights into a complex person and of
life at court under Henry VIII. For the most part, Mr. Ives maintains a proper
distance from his subject, but from time to time, he opens his cloak of objectivity to
expose the admirer beneath. If you are also an admirer of glimpses of court life,
both in France and England, then you should order this book.

Tudor Odours
Smells like Tudor Spirit. If youve got a "nose for news", (like the Times),
then this is for you. I do actually own a copy, but, its still safe in the clear
plastic wrapper. "Stinking Streets, riddled with rats and plague"
"Sailors on the high seas"
"Revolting Royals", and more. Just
reading the back cover sends me straight to a clove studded orange.Part of the
"Smelly Old History" series: "Roman Aromas"and"Victorian
Vapours". Good for a giggle.

Ghost in the Castle. Sigrid Heuck. A captive owl against a backdrop of
medieval Europe. This rare bird, traveling with a circus, is sheltered and fed. It has
forgotten how to forage for food and doesn't remember ever flying. When the opportunity
for escape presents itself, the owl hesitates. Freedom means taking responsibility and
risks. (This is a childrens book, so the Tudor Times editors will leave off
drawing any comparisons to present day welfare programs.)

- The
Breath of an Unfeed Lawyer-Shakespeare on Lawyers and the Law.
From the publisher, Catbird Press, catbird@pipeline.com, 01/04/97:
Shakespearean wit and wisdom about and applied to the law. Edward J. Bander has collected
the choicest morsels of Shakespearean wit and wisdom about lawyers and the law. He has
also applied Shakespeares words to legal matters, with very humorous results. A
perfect gift for any lawyer, paralegal, legal secretary, law student, or anyone who
delights in a well turned phrase turned against the legal system.
- Shakespeares
Bawdy Thank goodness for Eric Partridge's dictionary of Elizabethan smut, so
we can get the double-entendres, too. Thus, "hardening of one's brows" (The
Winter's Tale) refers to being cuckolded, "laced mutton" (Two Gentleman
of Verona) is a prostitute, "riggish" (Cleopatra) means lascivious,
and "groping for trout in a peculiar river" (Measure for Measure) means
copulating with a woman.
- Medieval
& Tudor Drama John Gassner
- Tudor
PlaysAn Anthology of Early English Drama. Edmund Creeth. Serious
students only. (Or, those with a highly refined sense of medieval mirth). Useful for
students of Shakespeare for glimpses of his inspiration. Also useful for students of early
language use. (N.B.-- This is written in the language of the time, with the exception of
the introductions and notes. Not recommended for light readers, these are the actual plays
presented in the 15th -16th centuries, in period language. For any
reader, we recommend you find this through an inter-library loan before you commit
to a purchase).
- A

used by other Elizabethan writers. Indexed by character for those who have favorites.

- A Dialogue
Against the Fever Pestilence (Extra, Series : No 52) Mark Bullen. This
comment is a Boleyn writing about a Bullen who is writing about a Bullein (often spelt
"Bulleyn", just another fun variation for those boisterous Boleyns). I've got
this on order, so watch this space for the review.
- The
Great Pox: The French Disease in Renaissance Europe. Jon Arrizabalqa. A
scholarly investigation of the response in Italy, France, and Germany to the sudden
appearance of a seemingly new disease, ``the pox'' (syphilis), in the 1490s. To a
continent only just recovering from the Black Death (which decimated a third of Europe's
population 130 years earlier), this new disease seemed like an equally lethal calamity.
Some of the devout, considering how the disease was transmitted, felt that ``the pox'' was
God's punishment on sinners and required no intervention.

what ingredients were used and what they cost - and they show that there was little
difference between the care offered by a university-trained physician and a self-taught
woman.
